Let me tell you how I spent 40 years of my life walking the world for God
Dear Friend,
My name is Arthur Blessitt and I want to share with you what THE CROSS of Christ really means to me.
I believe THE CROSS is a symbol of new life. It is hope for those in need. It is restoration for the broken-hearted. It is God’s personal message of salvation.
One night during the turbulent ’60s,
I heard Jesus speak to me.
Jesus told me to take the 12-foot wooden cross off the wall of my West Hollywood Jesus coffee house and carry the message of the cross to the world’s people. (I had made the cross and hung it on the wall of our building.)

This simple act of obedience started in 1968 as a short walk up and down the Sunset Strip with the cross on my shoulder.
I was compelled by God’s love to simply share Jesus with everyone who crossed my path and to offer peace to everyone God brought to me.
It wasn’t long before my walk up and down Sunset Boulevard turned into a marathon walk from Los Angeles to Washington, DC.
On that walk, I shared what THE CROSS and Jesus meant to me with everyone I met. I prayed for those who asked for prayer—and offered the blessings of God to everyone.
By the time I reached Washington, I had lifted up THE CROSS and shared the love of Jesus with thousands of people who came to know Him as Savior and Lord.
My walk across America was over, but
there was still more walking to do
Back on the Sunset Strip as I continued to carry THE CROSS up and down the streets of L.A., a BBC reporter who interviewed me said…
“You ought to try this in Northern Ireland.”

His words stayed with me and it wasn’t long before Jesus said to go there on my first overseas trip.
There I found people on both sides of a war zone with the same fears…the same needs…the same hopes for themselves and their families. And I found the power of THE CROSS drawing people seeking answers to Jesus.
This was the beginning of a worldwide adventure on the road with THE CROSS on my shoulder—meeting peasants and presidents, atheists and missionaries, terrorists and tribal leaders—to share the symbol of THE CROSS and the love of Jesus.

One step at a time, I became an instrument in God’s hands to share the message of THE CROSS with people around the world…
- I was invited to Rome to share God’s love with Pope John Paul II.
- While in Israel, I was asked to stay at the home of Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin.
- In Nicaragua, I was awoken from my sleep at gunpoint as guerillas prepared to have me executed on the spot.
- I was welcomed warmly by tribesmen in the jungles of Panama—even though they spoke no English.
I never knew how these journeys would end or if I would live through them. But my calling was clear and I trusted God to carry me through.
My walk from nation to nation and across continents has put me in touch with people both meek and powerful, including all their hurts, pains, struggles, dreams, joys, hunger, greed, generosity and hate.
No matter what language or religion or race—these are the struggles we all share. These were the burdens many strangers laid down at THE CROSS that I carried in obedience to God—burdens that weighed far more than the rugged wooden cross.

Today, my adventure is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest journey on foot in the history of the world.
This historic and unprecedented walk with a 12-foot cross has taken me through deserts, jungles, cities and islands across all 7 continents (including Antarctica), 315 nations, island groups and territories. This includes every sovereign nation on earth and every major inhabited island group. In all, I have walked over 38,102 miles across the globe, all on foot.

Recently, my friend and filmmaker Matt Crouch interviewed me and pored through hours of old television news clips and Super 8mm film as well as countless photographs detailing my 40-year journey around the world.

It seemed almost surreal to me that the film premiered in Hollywood at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, not far from “His Place,” the Jesus coffee house where I first held midnight services for the young people of L.A.’s radical ’60s scene.

Now I was walking on a red carpet carrying THE CROSS and still ministering to people who shook my hand and took my picture.
Beside me was my wonderful wife Denise, who has been with me and THE CROSS in 292 nations, island groups and territories, and most of my seven children who have all been in dozens of nations with me and THE CROSS.
This was not done alone. I have the greatest wife and children, who also helped this mission come to pass.
